Unsafe Ingredients to Look for in Skin Care Products

Here is a list of ingredients often found in some of the more common skin care products, which have the potential to cause adverse health effects. You would be wise to avoid skin care products that might contain any of the following ingredients:

  • Acrylamide:

    Acrylamide is commonly found in a lot of facial and hand creams. Studies indicate a link between acrylamide and breast tumors.

  • Alcohols:

    Skin care products containing ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, methanol benzyl alcohol, or SD alcohol, have the potential to cause dryness or irritation to the skin. Alcohol can strip away the skin's natural moisture, which makes the skin more prone to viruses, molds, and bacteria. Alcohol can also encourage age spots and skin aging. Certain ingredients such as Cetearyl and Stearyl alcohol might also feature in skin care products, yet these are types of waxes and have nothing to do with alcohols.

  • Dioxane:

    Commonly seen in skin care products. High concentrations of the 1,4-Dioxane ingredients can easily be absorbed via the skin. 1,4-Dioxane is regarded as a chemical known to cause cancer as stated by the State of California health authorities. It is an off-shoot of a Petrochemical referred to as Ethylene Oxide, which is a cancer causing component. It is also a fundamental part of the procedure referred to as Ethoxylation, which aims to make harsher ingredients a lot milder. Dioxane is regarded as being a neurotoxicant, kidney toxicant, and respiratory toxicant to name a few, as noted by the California EPA. Dioxane is also leading cause of groundwater contamination.

  • Mineral Oil:

    Petrolatum, liquid paraffin, petrolatum, and paraffin wax are a petroleum byproduct (distillation of gasoline from crude oil), which coats the skin and locks in moisture. This results in clogged pores and an interference with the skin's natural ability to purge toxins, which in the long-term will encourage skin blemishes, such as acne. Mineral oil can cause photosensitivity (sun allergy) and strips our naturally produced oils causing dryness and chapping, as well as premature ageing. Most mineral oil derivatives can be polluted with the cancer causing Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). Manufacturers also frequently include mineral oil in common skin products, such as shampoo, cream, lotion, and conditioners because of its lower cost.

  • Padimate-O:

    Padimate (also referred to as Octyl Dimethyl) is a common component found in sunscreen lotions. Similar to Diethanolamine (DEA), this ingredient can readily form nitrosamine, which is known as a carcinogenic. There is some concern that the energy absorbed by the sunscreen can trigger an escalation in the levels of free radicals, which in turn can increase the risk of skin cancers.

  • Parabens:

    The Parabens (Ethyl Paraben, Methyl, and Propyl butyl) are widely used in skin care products (including moisturizers) as a preservative component. Studies indicate that these ingredients might be a cancer-causing component and interfere with the endocrine system (which influences almost every organ, cell, and function of the body), and might also cause skin rashes and allergic reactions.

  • Phenol Carbolic Acid:

    Frequent ingredient in lotions and skin creams. It has the potential to cause convulsions, paralysis, and circulatory collapse, and in the worst-case scenario, death due to respiratory failure.

  • Rancid Natural Emollients:

    Ideally natural oil used in skin care lotions should be cold pressed. If oils are refined, they are often stripped of essential nutrients and can also feature poisonous trans-fatty acids. Most of the natural oils will go rancid soon after their expiry date.

  • Toluene:

    Toluene (also known as benzyl and benzoic) is found in most of artificial fragrances and is obtained from coal tar and petroleum. Chronic exposure to this ingredient can cause anemia, kidney or liver damage, lowered blood cell count, and might also have an effect on a developing fetus. Also, avoid an ingredient called butylated Hydroxytoluene (bHT) as it also contains toluene.

  • Triclosan:

    Triclosan is an anti-bacterial agent that is widely found in skin care products, as well as certain weed killers. Studies suggest triclosan might be a contributing factor in some strains of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, to a large extent because of its use in skin care products.
